The decision between a concrete patio vs. wooden decking is one of the most commonly faced choices in garden improvement — and one of the most frequently made on aesthetic grounds alone, when it should be made on a combination of aesthetic preference, practical performance, maintenance commitment, and the specific characteristics of the space involved.

Both materials have genuine strengths and genuine limitations. Both have evolved significantly in specification and quality over the past decade. And both are frequently chosen for reasons that do not quite match the reality of what they deliver over a ten or twenty-year lifespan in a typical UK garden. This guide works through the comparison honestly so that the decision you make is the one that serves your garden, your lifestyle, and your budget over the long term — not just on the day of installation.


The UK Climate Consideration

Before the materials themselves, the climate in which they will exist matters. The UK’s temperate maritime climate — wet winters, mild summers, limited frost but regular freeze-thaw cycling in some regions, significant rainfall through most of the year, and relatively low UV index compared to Mediterranean climates — affects both materials differently from how they behave in drier or warmer climates.

Wooden decking in the UK climate presents specific challenges. The combination of rainfall, limited drying time, and modest temperatures creates ideal conditions for the growth of algae, moss, and mould on timber surfaces. A deck that is green and slippery in winter is a safety risk as well as an aesthetic disappointment. The UK’s wet-dry-wet cycling also promotes the moisture movement (expansion and contraction) in timber that leads to splitting, checking, and joint movement over time.

Concrete patios in the UK climate are affected by freeze-thaw cycling — water entering small cracks or the concrete’s pore structure freezing, expanding, and widening those cracks over winter. The quality of the concrete mix and the adequacy of the construction — particularly the base preparation — determines whether this is a major or a minor long-term issue. Well-laid concrete on a properly prepared sub-base performs very well in the UK climate. Poorly laid concrete does not.

Types of Concrete Patio

When most people say “concrete patio,” they have in mind one of several distinct products:

Plain or brushed concrete (poured slab): A poured concrete slab, often with a brushed or broomed finish to provide texture and slip resistance. The most economical concrete patio option and still widely used in functional applications — side access paths, utility areas, or areas where aesthetics are secondary to durability.

Pattern imprinted concrete (PIC or stamped concrete): A poured concrete slab that is stamped while wet with pattern rollers to imprint stone, slate, cobble, or brick textures. Can be very convincing aesthetically. The colour is achieved through powder releases and surface sealants. Pattern imprinted concrete has been very popular in the UK market for twenty years and is available in a wide range of patterns and colours.

Exposed aggregate concrete: The surface of the slab is treated (washed or brushed while green) to reveal the aggregate within the concrete mix. Creates a textured, natural-looking surface. Very durable and slip-resistant.

Concrete pavers or flags: Rather than a poured monolithic slab, individual concrete pavers, flags, or block paving units are laid on a prepared sub-base. This is technically a different construction approach from a cast-in-situ slab — the joints between units allow for movement and drainage — but the material is concrete. This category includes the large-format concrete flags that have become one of the most popular patio surfacing choices in the UK in the past decade, often manufactured to resemble natural stone, slate, or limestone to a very convincing standard.

Large-format porcelain paving: Not concrete, but frequently compared in the same evaluation — large-format (600mm × 600mm, 900mm × 600mm) porcelain pavers that are laid on a prepared sub-base. The hardest, most impervious, and lowest-maintenance paving option, with the widest range of design options including very convincing stone, slate, concrete, and wood-effect finishes.

The Advantages of Concrete

Durability. A well-laid concrete patio in any of the above forms has an effective lifespan measured in decades — 25–40 years for quality poured concrete; longer still for good-quality concrete pavers or porcelain. It does not rot, does not warp, does not become structurally compromised by moisture. It will require maintenance, but not the intensive annual maintenance that timber requires.

Low long-term maintenance. After initial sealing (for poured concrete and pattern imprinted concrete) and periodic re-sealing every few years, a concrete patio’s primary maintenance requirement is cleaning — jet washing annually to remove algae, moss, and general soiling. This is a few hours’ work once a year, not the ongoing seasonal commitment of timber maintenance.

Structural capability. A concrete patio can support heavy loads — garden furniture, outdoor kitchens, hot tubs, heavy planters — without risk of structural compromise. Decking, particularly softer timber or lower-specification composite, has load limitations that concrete does not.

Fire safety. Concrete does not burn. For areas immediately adjacent to the house where a barbeque or fire pit might be used, concrete eliminates the fire risk that exists with timber decking.

Cost at lower price points. Plain concrete and pattern imprinted concrete are among the most affordable patio surfacing options for large areas. A pattern imprinted concrete patio for a typical rear garden can be installed for £80–£150 per square metre supply and lay — significantly less than equivalent decking in many specifications.

The Limitations of Concrete

Aesthetic inflexibility. Once poured, a concrete slab is fixed. If the design, colour, or pattern is wrong, or if aesthetics change, the only remediation is to break it up — which is heavy, expensive work. Concrete pavers and paving flags are more recoverable, but still not as easily changed as timber decking.

Heat absorption. Concrete absorbs and retains heat, which can make south-facing concrete patios uncomfortably hot in summer. Light-coloured concrete mitigates this significantly; dark-toned concrete can become very uncomfortable underfoot in warm sunny weather.

Cracking. All concrete will develop some cracks over time, from thermal movement, ground movement, or tree root activity. Cracks in a monolithic concrete slab are permanent unless filled (which is rarely invisible). Paved surfaces allow individual units to be lifted and relaid if movement occurs.

Weight. A concrete patio requires significant earthwork preparation — usually excavation to 150–200mm depth, a compacted hardcore sub-base, and then the concrete or bedding and pavers on top. This limits its viability for applications where weight loading of an existing structure is a concern, such as a flat roof terrace.


Wooden Decking: What It Offers

Types of Timber Decking

Softwood decking (treated pine or spruce): The entry-level timber decking option. Pressure-treated to resist rot, but requires regular maintenance (annual cleaning, biennial treatment with preservative or decking oil) to extend its life. Typically lasts 10–15 years with good maintenance. The least expensive timber option.

Hardwood decking: Naturally durable hardwood species — ipê (Brazilian walnut), cumaru (Brazilian teak), bangkirai, garapa, and European oak — are significantly more durable than softwood and, in the denser species, resist moisture ingress, rot, and insect attack effectively without the chemical treatment required for softwood. Ipê decking, the benchmark for hardwood deck performance, has a natural lifespan in exterior use of 25–40+ years with minimal maintenance. It is dense enough that it does not need oiling to preserve its structural integrity — though it will silver to a grey colour without periodic oiling.

Sustainability caveat: The environmental credentials of tropical hardwood decking vary significantly by sourcing. FSC-certified hardwood decking from sustainably managed forests is available and should be specified where tropical species are used. European oak decking is an alternative that avoids the tropical sourcing question entirely, though it is less naturally resistant and requires more maintenance.

Composite decking: The category that has grown most significantly in the UK decking market over the past decade. Composite decking uses a mixture of wood fibre and recycled plastic (PVC or polyethylene) compressed into boards that have the appearance and feel of wood but the maintenance characteristics of plastic. Quality composite decking — from manufacturers such as Trex, Millboard, and Cedral — does not require oiling or treating, does not rot, is resistant to the algae and moss growth that affects timber, and is available with realistic wood-grain textures and a wide range of colour options.

The distinction between hollow-core and solid composite matters. Hollow-core composite boards are lighter but more susceptible to cracking and impact damage. Solid core composite boards are heavier and more structurally robust.

The Advantages of Decking

Warmth underfoot. Timber and composite decking are warmer underfoot than concrete — this is simply physics. In the UK’s cool climate, the thermal mass difference between timber and stone or concrete is perceptible and valued. Decking does not feel cold to bare feet in the way that concrete or stone does.

Elevated application. Where a garden slopes away from the house, timber decking can be elevated on a subframe to create a level outdoor space without the significant earthwork and retaining structure that creating a level concrete patio on a slope would require. This is decking’s structural advantage in sloped garden situations.

Easier modification and repair. Individual decking boards can be lifted and replaced without compromising the surrounding surface. A damaged board is replaced; a damaged area of concrete slab is patched (visibly) or broken up and relaid (expensively).

Aesthetic warmth. The natural grain and colour variation of timber provides a visual warmth that concrete cannot fully replicate, even with very good imitation finishes. For those who prioritise natural materials and organic aesthetics in their outdoor space, timber has qualities that composites and concrete cannot precisely replicate.

Speed of installation. A timber deck frame and boards can be installed significantly faster than an equivalent concrete patio — typically a few days for a standard-sized deck versus a week or more for a concrete patio that requires earthwork, sub-base preparation, and curing time.

The Limitations of Decking

Maintenance requirement (softwood and hardwood). Natural timber decking requires annual cleaning and periodic treatment — at a minimum, annual jet washing and biennial oiling or treating. Without this maintenance, softwood decking deteriorates quickly; hardwood decking will survive structurally but will look neglected. The commitment to this maintenance is not trivial: it is a day’s work annually for a typical garden deck, and many homeowners find that in practice they maintain it less consistently than they intended.

Slip risk in UK conditions. Green, wet decking is genuinely slippery — this is one of the most consistent practical complaints about timber decking in the UK climate. Anti-slip strips can be retrofitted; some composite products have textured surfaces specifically designed for slip resistance; but softwood decking in shade or in regularly wet locations in the UK autumn and winter is a slip hazard that should not be underestimated.

  • You want to support heavy items — outdoor kitchen, hot tub, large furniture — without load concerns
  • The area is immediately adjacent to the house and fire proximity is a factor
  • Budget is constrained and a large area needs to be covered

Choose composite decking if:

  • A sloped garden requires an elevated level surface without major earthwork
  • Maintenance commitment exists but you want it to be less intensive than natural timber
  • Warmth underfoot and visual warmth are priorities
  • You want a longer lifespan than softwood without tropical hardwood sourcing concerns

Choose natural hardwood decking if:

  • The aesthetic of real timber grain is a genuine priority over convenience
  • The area is appropriately sized and positioned for maintenance to be practically manageable
  • The specification includes an FSC-certified sustainably sourced hardwood

Think carefully before choosing pressure-treated softwood if:

  • You are not genuinely committed to annual maintenance
  • The deck will be in shade or a north-facing position where algae and moss growth will be persistent
  • You are near the end of a property’s anticipated ownership period and the deck will need to be presentable for sale within 5–7 years

The best outdoor surfacing decision is the one that you will still be satisfied with in year ten, not just year one. The questions that reveal the answer most reliably are: how much time am I willing to spend maintaining this? What will the area be used for? Is the ground level or sloped? And how important is it that the surface looks good with minimal effort in November as well as July?
